Sleep Apnea and Snoring

Are you tired of being tired?  Ready to leave your spouse in the bedroom and sleep on the couch?  Looking for a snoring solution?  Now there is an effective way to control snoring and obstructive sleep apnea without resorting to cumbersome CPAP devices.

  • Dr. Gorman is happy to consult with those who feel that they are having a problem with snoring or sleep apnea but have not been diagnosed, as well as those who are unable or unwilling to wear a CPAP unit.  Our oral appliance therapy for snoring and sleep apnea, could be the answer you’ve been searching for.
  • In North America, being overweight is one of the major causes and contributing factors to sleep apnea.  Two of the most common signs of sleep apnea are snoring and frequent daytime tiredness.
  • A small device, similar to an orthodontic appliance, can be an alternative to CPAP machines and, in many cases, be the first choice for treatment of mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Oral Appliances are placed in the mouth and are worn much like an orthodontic appliance or sports mouth protector.  They are worn during sleep to prevent the collapse of the tongue and soft tissues in the back of the throat so that the airway stays open during sleep.  The appliances promote adequate air intake and help to provide normal sleep in people who snore and have a medical condition known as sleep apnea.
  • Oral appliances can be used alone or in conjunction with other means of therapy such as continuous positive air pressure (CPAP).  Here are two of the appliances we use in our office.

  • Determination of proper therapy can only be made by joint consultation of your dentist and sleep physician.  Solutions to snoring and sleep apnea problems can be found at Gorman Dental.  If you or a loved one snores or has had difficulty wearing their medically prescribed CPAP, Dr. Martin Gorman of has had the years of experience necessary to offer a unique dental solution.
  • Dr. Gorman also works closely with other dentists throughout the country, as well as with family physicians and sleep specialists.  He serves the needs of those who snore and have sleep apnea in Los Angeles and Southern California.
  • Here are some startling facts:
    • Of the general adult population in middle age, 93% of women and 82% of men with moderate to severe sleep apnea syndrome have not been clinically diagnosed.
    • Sleep apnea is even less likely to be diagnosed in the older population.
    • Unrecognized sleep-disordered breathing is linked to motor vehicle accidents and may account for a significant proportion of accidents.
  • Your dental care can play an important role in the recognition and treatment of this disease in cooperation with your physician(s).
